Winter storm reminds me of records of past

More information on the Cherry Hill Post Office mentioned in these items a few weeks ago:

When the post office was established in 1846 near what’s now Poplar Springs Church, it was part of Chickasaw County.
At some point it moved to Thorn, then back to near Poplar Springs. It was near the Ben Howard place at one time. Moved a few more times and closed at Center Point.
Another place was called Cherry Hill many years later, it was a school and college at one time. It was located near Highway 341 East on Bull Mountain Road.
According to James Clark’s History of Vardaman book, that school was incorporated in 1889.
The snow and ice last week reminds us of past winters.

Received about 4” of snow and sleet at my residence but no substantial freezing rains.
The most sleet I recall fell in 1985 (a photo of that event was in the CCJ a few weeks ago) it was about 5”. (Put chains on “Ole Blue” and went to work each day.)
Even ole timers did not recall an event like that. Temperature were in the teens, low rumbling thunder was hear and heavy sleet fell for at least 24 hours.
The most snow I recall was in the early 1960’s about 12°. Temperature fell to near zero.
Talked with Fred Hawkins about the weather last week. He recalls a snowy event back in the 50’s where evidence of it stayed on the ground six weeks.

Hawkins recalled in his young years (he was 92 Tuesday) that due to an ice storm people tied boards on shoes with nails to give traction.
I have heard my dad speak of tying wire on shoes to walk and tend to livestock during ice storms.
No low temperature was set during this storm but WTVA did report below freezing for seven consistent days. Has not occurred since 1989.
One record was set for this storm, no rural mail service all last week.

David Logan had calves born during the ice and snow, but he said they are doing fine.
Due to the weather, my Covid-19 shot was canceled last week. Hoping to receive one this week. Several churches did not meet again last Sunday due to ice and snow on many roads.
Some have predicted another snow the first of March. We have received heavy snows as late as the last of the month. They are usually short lived!
Sympathy to all bereaved families including Don Bell, Jodie Bailey, wife of Vardaman native Dr. Wayne Bailey, and the Gregory infant.
