Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival begins Saturday

Miss Mississippi, the 2017 Sweet Potato Queen and Kay Bain are among those scheduled to appear at the annual Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival this Saturday, Nov. 4 during the arts and crafts festival on Main Street.
Miss Mississippi Anne Elizabeth Buys, of Vicksburg, will be at the fire department from 9-11 a.m. signing pictures.

Kay Bain and her Morning Show Band will be among the performers on the Veterans’ Park stage starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, immediately following the Sweet Potato Pie Eating Contest.
More than 200 arts and crafts vendors will line Main Street for all to enjoy, including the always popular sweet potato tasting booth.

In addition to the many arts and crafts, there will be a 5K run/walk, antique tractor show, and the famous BBQ Chicken Dinner at the Front Porch.
Live entertainment will go on throughout the day. The information booth will be set up offering a wide variety of products including sweet potato t-shirts, caps and cookbooks.
The 5K Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. in front of the post office with registration at 7 a.m.

The Tasting Booth will open at 10 a.m. where you can sample ten sweet potato foods prepared and donated by sweet potato farm families.
Contest judging for best Washed/Waxed Bushels of Vardaman Sweet Potatoes, Sweet Potato Creatures, artwork, photography, and writing will also begin at 10 a.m.
The messy, but always entertaining Sweet Potato Pie Eating Contest will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the Veterans’ Park stage with cash prizes for first place in each division.
The Sweet Potato King and Queen Pageants will go on throughout the week with the 2017 queen being crowned Thursday night.

TaterStock, a countywide worship rally, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m.the  at Vardaman High School Gym. Admission is free for the event, which will be led by “Holy Pursuit” and feature Rob Sevilla as speaker.
The Original Sweet Potato Recipe Contest will be Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. All entries must be turned in to the VHS cafeteria before 1 p.m. The festival banquet will conclude the week’s festivities that Saturday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Front Porch on Main Street. Banquet tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
