Sherry Brasher

If Sherry Brasher of Bruce makes barbecue or spaghetti for a meal at her house, “everybody’s happy,” she said. “Spaghetti was my thing,” she said about being able to cook a little bit when she and Eddie married. She also makes barbecue sandwiches a lot, and her recipe is to add 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water to a pork roast, and cook in the crockpot for six hours. Her children, Avery and Erika, also like vegetable soup, and prefer it over chili.

Sherry has picked up a good many crockpot recipes from Facebook’s “Crockin’ Girls”, where a group of women share their crockpot recipes. “They cook things you wouldn’t even think of putting in a crockpot.” Of the most unique to Sherry was baking a cake, which she said she hasn’t tried because they aren’t big on sweets at their house.

For her daughter’s second grade class at Calhoun Academy, their October ballgame fundraising items included fried Twinkies and Oreos (introduced by Holly Gore and Haley Nichols), chili, and vegetable soup. For the fundraisers, “everyone makes their own batch (of chili and vegetable soup) and brings it,” said Sherry. These items have been that class’s fundraiser for five years now and will stay with them through graduation.

The items were also sold at the Halloween Carnival at the school, and that class was top fundraiser for their third time. They also hold a bake sale, and an October stew cooking done by Jerry Mitchell.

Grilled fish with blackened seasoning is something Sherry likes to prepare for company, and a holiday regular for her is green bean casserole, “with extra French fried onions”, which she also makes in the crockpot.
