Dock was a good neighbor

By Published On: January 6, 2021

Sunday was the funeral for our neighbor, and Derma’s Mayor Dock Gabbert. He passed away from complications of the virus. We in the neighborhood will miss him. Since AG has gotten down and unable to do things in the yard, Dock came over and said I will take care of the yard, and he did.
He helped get the two storage buildings out of the yard, even sowed grass in that area, then Joe was putting up sections of fence along that side. Yes, Dock helped with that. I could go on and on about how he took an interest in the welfare of ones here. We appreciated all that he did and please pray for his loved ones he has left behind.
I did get some Christmas holiday news for us. Laura Laughlin enjoyed having her son, David, for several days. They all enjoyed brunch on Christmas morning with Buzz and Annie Busby in Mathiston. The little girls loved showing all Santa brought to them.

Dana Wells enjoyed having Amber Wells of Peachtree Corners, GA and JB Wells of Starkville for a few days. They attended the Candle Light Christmas Eve service at Calhoun City FBC before having a Christmas Eve meal with Kirk and Penny Nichols family. On Christmas day, Dana, Amber and JB visited Nancy Doles through the window at the Bruce Assisted Living Center. While here Amber and JB visited with their grandmother Mary Sue Wells.
Johnny and Beth Dean were happy to have their daughter Sharon Davis, Hattiesburg, visit with them over the holidays.
Tim and Vicki Lunceford enjoyed a visit from their daughter Amy Kimble, Pensacola, FL for several days.

Please include in prayer the ones with Covid-19 you know of and others with health problems. Those I know of are Doug Russell, Lynn Casey now in swingbed in the BMH-Calhoun for therapy due to his bout with the virus; Penny Lucius, Harold Tallent, Ann Whitt, Alan Murphree, Waylon Logan, Lisa Norwood, Jimmy Coker, Shirley Herrod, Wilma Gibson, AG Gibson, Henry Lee Taylor and Billy Doyle Alexander. There are many more I have not heard from, but will be glad to add them to the prayer list if you let me know.
Sympathy and prayers for the families of Dock Gabbert, James Magness, and Vernice Tutor. Pray for comfort for those each has left behind.

Intended for last week: My last article for the year 2020 and what a year it has been for everyone. I looked back over my drafts that I keep for some reason, and over the year 2020 we have lost so many of our dear friends, neighbors, or family. This year has had a lot of “first” for each family. Events such as Sweet Potato Festival, Spring Fest, schools, and many others to just name a few. Our Christmas this year was a first for us too….first in my life that we spent the day home alone. Daughter Gale and her husband were to come up but ended up testing positive with the virus.

Again I’ll mention the positive cases for Calhoun County. Since December 22 we have increased by 92 more now up to 1106 as of Sunday, December 27. People that is in 5 days! Five days and almost 100 cases now. I know everyone is trying their best and taking it serious. We have neighbors and friends ending up in ICU units and in critical condition, there have been medical workers coming down with it even wearing all the protective gear so yes it is contagious. Ones have come home on oxygen, have long lasting effects, difficulty getting their strength back.

Several families had their annual Christmas gathering. Lots of laughs, going over the memories, plenty of food to enjoy. I don’t have the details on these get togethers but I know they enjoyed trying to have a normal Christmas.
Please continue to pray for ones with covid-19 that you know of. Remember in your prayers Doug Russell, Lynn Casey, Penny Lucius, Harold Tallent, Ann Whitt, Penny Nelson, Waylon Logan, Lisa Norwood, Jimmy Coker, Shirley Herrod, Alan Murphree, Wilma Gibson, AG Gibson, Henry Lee Taylor and Billy Doyle Alexander.
Have a safe and happy new year, and pray 2021 will be better than 2020.
