Big rainfall records set in June

It was this week, July 15, 1954, the first United States jet passenger flight was taken.
Note from James Clark’s 2007 historical news of the Vardaman and East Calhoun County area:
“Midway Baptist Church was organized in March of 1848 in what was then Chickasaw County. When Calhoun County was organized in 1852 the church was transferred to Calhoun. The church is still on the same site as when organized. It was originally called The Baptist Church of Christ at Midway.

“The name Midway came due to the dividing ridge on which the church was built and now stands. The rain that falls on the south side of the church flows into Top-a-Shaw River and that on the north side flows in Yalobusha River.”
The above information was compiled for Clark from the late Wilton Griffin.
My note: the original name of the church, Midway Baptist Church of Christ, was apparently the way numerous other Baptist churches were originally called, Baptist Church of Christ.

Rainfall records were broken in June. Received 14.95” at my residence. David Green had 14.3” at Rocky Mount and John Leachman had 14.7” at Lantrip.
Only one month in the last 20 years have we received more rain in any month of the year.
In February of ‘19 we received 16” which caused severe flooding in our area.
The driest June was ‘08, only .6”.

While Billy F. and I were in Tupelo June 29 went by NMMC and talked with Maxine Spratlin.
We also went by Sanctuary House and visited among others, Wayne Fugett.
Talked Sunday with Annette Vanlandingham. Sympathy to her and her family die to the death of her sister, Peggy Foster Hood of the Vardaman-Houston area. Services, funeral and burial were June 27 at New Liberty.
Sympathy to all bereaved including the Tommy James Jr. family in our community and Faye Adams family. (Mrs. Adams’ husband was a long time minister for the Church of God of Prophecy.)
