Friday storms topple trees, damage homes around county

Strong winds, thunderstorms and a possible tornado left a lot of damage in its wake as it moved through Calhoun County Friday afternoon.

Fire on North Newberger

newberger fireBruce and Chickenbone firemen were on scene Saturday morning at a fire on North Newberger in Bruce. No one lives in the home that caught fire around 8:30 a.m. It was quickly contained.


Stewart Cemetery markers dedicated

Cemetery Marker2Members of the Calhoun Avengers Camp #1969 Sons of Confederate Veterans; the Margery B. Rogers Clark Chapter #17 Order of the Confederate Rose; Co. G, 15th Miss. Infantry Honor Guard along with descendents, neighbors and friends met at Stewart Cemetery Saturday afternoon to honor the memory of and to dedicate monuments to Private Elisha Edwards, War of 1812, and Private Simon J. Jenkins, Confederate States army.

Storms cause damage around county

storm3 thweattStrong winds, thunderstorms and a possible tornado left a lot of damage in its wake as it moved through Calhoun County this afternoon, but there are no injuries reported from around Calhoun as of this time. Among the most damaged sites is this home of the Thweatt family on North McSweyne in Bruce.

storm2 busThis tree toppled over on a school bus beside the Bruce Band Hall, but there was no significant damage done to the bus, which was empty at the time.

storm1Trees were reported down all around the county, blocking several roads. This particular tree was down in the Rocky Mount Community. Supervisor Jennifer Rogers shared this picture.

storm pepaAlong with county road crews, town public workers, firemen, police forces, and the sheriff's department, Pontotoc Electric (above) and Natchez Trace were out in the storm repairing damaged power lines.
