Sen. Hyde-Smith becomes third Republican to join race for State Ag Commissioner

AP – State Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Brookhaven says Friday that she's running for Mississippi commissioner of agriculture and commerce.

Hyde-Smith is a cattle rancher and is completing her 12th year in the Senate, where she chairs the Agriculture Committee.

Hyde-Smith switched from Democrat to Republican in December.

Agriculture Commissioner Lester Spell is not seeking a fifth term this year.

Cattle farmer Max Phillips of Taylorsville and Republican State Rep. Dannie Reed of Ackerman have also filed to run for agriculture commissioner as Republicans.

No Democrats have filed to run.

Candidates' filing deadline is March 1. Party primaries are Aug. 2, and the general election is Nov. 8.
