Sabougla begins process of starting a volunteer fire department

Calhoun County could soon be adding a ninth volunteer fire department.

Efforts are underway to establish a “substation” at Sabougla in southwest Calhoun County. Chancery Clerk Jess Moore, who’s assisting with the organizing effort, said the group has already secured an agreement with a Coahoma County fire department to purchase a 1995 firetruck for $5,000.
“We’ve seen the truck and it’s in really good condition,” Moore said.
Sabougla Church has also agreed to provide some of its property for the building. Moore said a group of approximately 30 is working to raise funds to purchase the truck and build the building.
Moore said the idea of a fire department in Sabougla has been discussed for more than a decade. Currently six firemen with Calhoun City’s department live in the Sabougla area.
Moore said the Sabougla department “wouldn’t necessarily be a stand alone department,” but possibly a sub-station for the Calhoun City Fire Department.
“Sabougla would likely just respond to calls west of the Hwys. 8-9 intersection,” Moore said.
The group is seeking donations currently and is in the process of scheduling fundraisers such as stew suppers.
