The game, played in sub-freezing temperatures, was tied 2-2 at the half.

Miguel Vazquez led the way with two goals. Alan Bejarano, Estavan Soto, Juan Medrano, Kevin Johnson and Jose Guererro each scored one.

Alan Bejarano earned “player of the game” honors for his defensive work at center back.

“Alan, along with Leo (Lopez), Diego (Gutierrez), and Joan (Juarez) were all outstanding holding our back line,” Coach Joel McNeece said. “It was also our best attacking performance. I love too see six different players scoring in a game. It says a lot for our offense.”

The Lady Rams finished in a 2-2 tie with Tishomingo and ultimately fell 4-3 in a deciding penalty kick shootout.

Maria Espiricueta, Karen Solis and Arasely Gonzalez accounted for the Vardaman goals.

“We were trailing 2-0 at the half and then played our best 40 minutes of soccer in the two-year history of the program,” McNeece said.

Karen Solis, who played a combination of forward and midfield in the match, earned player of the game honors.

“We’ve played a very challenging schedule to open the season against 4A and 5A schools to try and get ourselves ready for region play,” McNeece said. “We still have a lot of improving to do, but we’re pleased with the progress thus far.”
