Memorial service held for Calhoun soldier in France

A Memorial service was held last week in the Forest of Parroy in France for Calhoun County native Corporal Clayton Judge Hellums and Private Donald Owens.

The two men were killed in action in October of 1944 during World War II when their tank was hit by a German attack.

Gerard Louis, left, found Hellums’ dog tag at the spot of the attack in 2003 and returned it to the Hellums family in Sarepta.

The story of his discovery was first reported in The Journal in April of 2006. Click this link to read one of the series of stories.
