A 19-year-old foster child from Panola County led authorities on a high speed chase that ultimately ended in Calhoun County Thursday morning after she lost control of the stolen car she was driving on Hwy. 9 just south of Pittsboro.

Easleys Revisit Family Tradition With Sorghum Making

It had been more than 10 years since the Easley family had gathered around the old homeplace in the Wardwell Community, cranked up the mill and went to work cooking up a giant batch of sorghum molasses. Frances Hardin, of Calhoun City, can recall with great clarity the moment the United States entered World War II.  She was working for Congressman Jamie Whitten in Washington, D.C. and had been invited to a professional football game.
“I had never been to a professional ball game before, so I thought why not,” Hardin said.
Not long into the game many in the crowd began noticing that numerous colonels, generals and other military officers were being called out of the stadium.

Supervisors Looking At Potential 2.57 Mill Increase

Calhoun County is currently projected to experience a 2.57 mill increase next year as supervisors continue budget deliberations. The board met for nearly five hours last Wednesday to discuss the budget. The board made several cuts to the originally proposed budget before settling on the 2.57 mill increase.

Calhoun County Superintendent Mike Moore said the recently released test results from last year showed solid improvements around the school district, but he emphasized there is still “a lot more room for improvement.”
