Bruce, Calhoun City, Vardaman teams all in region semifinals this week

Calhoun County produced two regular season division champions this high school basketball season in the Vardaman Lady Rams and Bruce Trojans. Those teams will now lead the push for a trip to Jackson as all teams begin postseason play this week.

Bruce and Calhoun City will be playing at Walnut High School where the Trojans will be the top seed in the boys’ tournament. The Trojans finished the season 13-8 overall and unbeaten in division play.

They are led by seniors Taylor Shoemake, averaging almost 17 points a game, and Shaq Bush, who is contributing 13.

The Trojans will open district play Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. against Potts Camp. A win in the first round would guarantee the Trojans a home game next Tuesday in the first round of North Half.

The Vardaman Lady Rams will be the top seed at Tremont where they will begin play Thursday at 7 p.m. against TCPS.

The Lady Rams, 12-11 overall and 4-0 in division play, beat TCPS by 30 points when they met in the regular season.

Beating them again would give Vardaman a home game next Monday night in the opening round of North Half.

“We need to play with intensity for four quarters to reach our goals,” Vardaman Coach Deanna Winter said. “We’ve lost a couple of games to good teams recently when we spotted them big first half leads. We’ve got to play four quarters from here on out.”

The Bruce Lady Trojans will be a two seed and face Calhoun City Thursday at 4 p.m. in Walnut.

Calhoun City opened play Tuesday night, defeating Strayhorn 67-50.

The Lady Trojans, 13-9 overall and 4-1 in division, won both matchups against Calhoun City in the regular season, but both were close until late in the game.

The Lady Wildcats, seeded third in the tournament, finished the regular season with a 17-4 record overall, 3-2 in division.

The winner of Thursday’s matchup will earn the home playoff game next Monday night, while the loser will go on the road.

The Wildcats are also a three seed. They defeated Strayhorn 73-54 Tuesday night at the district tournament at Walnut. The Wildcats, 11-13 overall and 3-2 in district, will face Hickory Flat Thursday night. ‘City lost by three at Hickory Flat a few weeks ago.

The Vardaman Rams, also a three seed, will open their district tournament at Tremont Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against Houlka.  The Rams lost both matchups against Houlka during the regular season.  The outcome will determine whether the Rams are home or away next Tuesday in the opening round of North Half.
