Big night for Calhoun City; Wildcats, Lady ‘Cats clinch home playoff games next week

In the biggest two games of the season for Calhoun City basketball, the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats came up huge with two wins to send both teams to the 2-2A championship game.

The Lady Wildcats vanquished an old demon in rival Bruce, beating them 40-36 in Walnut to clinch a home playoff game next Monday. It was the first win for the Lady Wildcats over Bruce in five years.

The Lady Wildcats were swept during the regular season by the Lady Trojans, but only trailed briefly by three points Thursday night in earning the important post season win.

V Farmer led all scorers with 18 points for 'City. Antonique Jennings added 10.

Calhoun City will face top seed Potts Camp tonight at 7 p.m. in the region final.

The Wildcats played by most accounts their best game of the season in defeating Hickory Flat 61-57.

The game was close throughout with 'City's largest lead at seven points.

The Wildcats led by only two with 30 seconds to play with Hickory flat at the free throw line after Andrekus Ezell and Lavarious Varnado had both fouled out.

Hickory Flat could only hit one of the two free throws to pull within one. They immediately fouled Jean Chairse who also hit one of two free throws to return the Wildcats' lead to two points.

Chakel Gates, who finished with 25 points, then came up with a big steal at midcourt and hit free throws to give the Wildcats a four point lead and secure the victory.

Other Wildcat top scorers were Lavarious Varnado 13 points and Brieton Sykes 10.

The Wildcats will face Potts Camp in tonight's 8:30 p.m. final. They also have clinched a home playoff game next Tuesday night.
