Bruce split its games with Vardaman and South Pontotoc last week. This week they will join Calhoun City and Vardaman in the Calhoun County Softball Tournament at the Vardaman Sportsplex.

Wildcats Defeat West Lowndes In State Quarterfinal

The Calhoun City Wildcats utilized clutch shooting, hard-nosed defense,
and a never-quit attitude to rally from a 13-point deficit to defeat
West Lowndes 81-75 in the Class 1A Quarter Finals at the Mississippi
Coliseum in Jackson Monday night.

Annie Anderson

Annie Anderson, ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at Vardaman
Elementary School, loves seafood, loves to cook with mushrooms, and
loves food presentation. She also loves to watch the Food Network,
especially Paula Deen. She likes different kinds of cheese and says
that “cheese on everything makes it good.” She also loves baking and
often makes 10-12 desserts for holidays.

No Quit In These ‘Cats

Most teams would have quit. Most would have run out of gas after
spending 30 minutes of game clock trying to come back from a

Virginia Moore

Virginia J. Moore, 76, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at her residence with her family by her side. Services were December 23 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Decatur. Interment was at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 530 N. Sunnyside Road, Decatur, IL 62525. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Conner

Thomas Kirk Conner, 69, of Calhoun City, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 at Calhoun Health Services. He was born December 24, 1939, the son of Kirk and Pearlie Rainer Conner. He was a carpenter and member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Harold Coker Jr.

Harold Coker Jr., 66, of Grenada, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 at Grace Health and Rehab in Grenada. He was born January 17, 1943 in Coffeeville, the son of Harold E. and Syble Poe Coker. He was a supervisor/foreman at Heatcraft in Grenada. He was a National Guard Veteran, and was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church in Calhoun City.

Idell Bobo

Idell Cook Bobo died February 14, 2009. She was born November 22, 1936 to Earnest and Charlotte Cook in Vardaman. She was an active member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she was usher president, Sunday School teacher, and youth department worker. She worked for the welfare department and Headstart program, and did private duty for the Chandlers and others. On September 9, 1956, she was married to R.V. Bobo Sr. (B. Bobo), who preceded her in death, along with one child, Larue Bobo. She was the mother of nine children, three of whom being the first black triplets born in Calhoun County.

Prentice Brown

Prentice D. Brown, 90, of Calhoun City, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 at Calhoun Health Services Nursing Home. He was born January 6, 1919 in Pittsboro, the son of Hubert F. and Ola Kirk Bowling Brown. He was a retired office clerk at the Webb Clinic, and was a WWII Army Veteran. He was a member and deacon of Calhoun City First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion and DAV.
